Les sujets féminins sont au centre de l'oeuvre de Klimt. Il peint des portraits de femmes contemporaines à l'expression mysterieuse et rêveuse. Le tableau La Dame au manchon datant de 1917 est l'un de ces portraits. Le tableau a longtemps été considéré comme perdu. Néanmoins, on sait qu'un collectionneur privé l'a acheté à la fin des années 1920 ou au début des années 1930, et la National Gallery de Prague peut à nouveau présenter la peinture au public avec l'aimable autorisation de son propriétaire actuel.
