Influencé par l'environnement tropical et la culture polynésienne, l'œuvre a gagné en force expressive. Dans ses tableaux, il y a comme une sorte de mélancolie qui s'échappe, autour d'une situation les personnages ont des regards absents avec des attitudes dont se dégage une certaine douceur.

Le but de Kamakawiwo'ole était de créer une musique qui reste fidèle au son typique de la musique hawaïenne traditionnelle. Israel Kamakawiwoʻole devient célèbre lorsque son album Facing Future est commercialisé en 1993 avec son medley, Over the Rainbow.
